The UNESCO World Heritage listed “Sacred City of Kandy”, Sri Lanka’s hill capital, is situated 488 meters above sea level and was established in the 14th century and became the nation’s capital in the 16th century.
The capital of the Central Province is renowned for its culture and scenic beauty and sacred to all Buddhists as the “Dalada Maligawa” (the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha) is situated in the heart of Kandy town. The world-famous Esala Perahera, a cultural pageant venerating the Tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha, is a spectacular parade which goes on for ten nights in the month of August and features up to a hundred colorfully adorned elephants, highly skilled acrobatic Kandyan dancers and traditional drummers.

Temple of the Tooth

The Temple of tooth or Sri Dalada Maligawa is a temple in the city of Kandy in Sri Lanka. It was built within the royal palace complex which houses the only surviving relic of Buddha, Temple of tooth, which is venerated by Buddhists. The relic which situated Temple of tooth is played an important role in the local politics since ancient times; it’s believed that whoever holds the Temple of tooth relic holds the governance of the country, which caused the ancient kings to protect the Temple of tooth with great effort. Kandy was the capital of the Sinhalese kings.
